“Poets can be revolutionaries,” she said. It did embarrass him when she spoke in such naked ways, but he listened eagerly. “You can write your way into a new fake world, in a story, so why not write to make a new way to live in the real world? What about all these?” She pointed at the shelves lined with books.

“But,” he said, “Words require force, action, muscle. They are meaningless without them.”

“Then act,” she said. She reached over him, her naked body against his, her breath hot against his face, and turned off the light.
